I perform, partake and publish research articles in peer reviewed journals and present at international conferences on a wide range of medical topics, including gastroenterology and endoscopy (see list below).

In 2019 I was the first New Zealander to be awarded a research fellowship role in Tokyo, Japan, where under the tutelage of Dr. Ken Ohata, a leading world expert and his team, I learnt new endoscopic techniques to improve patient comfort performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as well as enhanced techniques to pick up subtle abnormalities and methods to accurately diagnose these and then successfully remove these endoscopically (through the camera).

Although I enjoy all aspects of gastroenterology I am particularly interested in gastroscopy and colonoscopy for the early detection of cancer in the stomach and colon. With techniques learnt in Japan, very small and subtle changes on the walls of these organs can be detected, and if diagnosed early, pre-cancers or cancers may be safely and completely removed without the need for invasive surgery or chemotherapy.

Outside of work, I enjoy fishing, rugby (both league and union!) and spend lots of time at the zoo with my family!
